Pelosi Doesn't Fall for McCarthy's Stunt

Kevin McCarthy thought he was going to be cute by jamming Nancy Pelosi on the January 6 Select Committee. But the two-time Speaker was having none of it. She vetoed two of the five selections he made - Jim Jordan and Jim Banks - who not only voted to decertify the results of the 2020 presidential election, but would most likely have turned the entire proceeding into a circus.

So what did McCarthy do? He took his ball and went home. Rather than make two substitutions, he withdrew entirely from the Select Committee. To which I say, good riddance. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Kev.

Let's be clear, here. Both McCarthy and Mitch McConnell torpedoed a bill that was co-written by a House Republican, which would've established an independent commission comprised of an equal number of Democrats and Republicans, all out of loyalty to a narcissistic, ex-president who incited the mob that stormed the Capitol. Their inability or unwillingness to stand up to the Big Lie is the reason Trump still wields the power he does over them and the country.

Credit Pelosi for standing her ground and saying enough is enough. And credit Liz Cheney for having the courage to call out her leader for the hypocrite he is. There's no love loss between those two, believe me. In fact, if Pelosi really wanted to fix McCarthy's wagon, she'd ask one of the Democrats on the Committee to step down and appoint Adam Kinzinger in their place.

Please spare me all the sanctimonious drivel about how Republicans will just use this as an excuse to go after Democrats for being partisan. Screw 'em. Like they weren't going to do that anyway? Seriously, if you thought for one moment that Jim Jordan was going to use his position on the Committee to get at the truth you haven't been paying attention. The last thing Jordan and his Trump sycophants want is the truth. In fact, Jordan already signaled what his intentions were when he said he planned on calling witnesses to find out why Pelosi didn't have enough cops on duty that day, even though he knows full well that the Speaker of the House has no control over the day to day operations of the Capitol Police.

I'm so sick and tired of this bullshit. Whether it's infrastructure, or voting rights, or the debt ceiling - yes, that's back on the table, people - or protecting the very seat of democracy, it's always the Democrats who have to be amenable and acquiesce to Republican demands. Well Nancy Pelosi did all that. She agreed to every single demand Kevin McCarthy made regarding the independent commission. And what was her reward? McCarthy accused her of breaking the institution. That's what you get for reaching across the aisle these days.

What happened on January 6 was appalling. Granting elected representatives who truly believe that the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol were just tourists a seat at the table would be an insult to those who lost their lives that day and would've provided a forum for them to peddle their baseless conspiracy theories. If House Republicans want to conduct their own "hearing" let them do it somewhere else.

Maybe they can hold it at Four Seasons Total Landscaping. I'm sure Rudy Giuliani can put in a good word for them, provided he isn't in some court trying desperately to hold onto his law license.
